Welcome to my new website
Hello and welcome to my new website. This is a huge milestone for me - it feels like I'm finally making the proper jump to my dream career as a nutritionist!
I love all things health, fitness and wellness - but what I don't love is the amount of conflicting advice is out there! It can be so confusing overwhelming and with so many of us women already juggling kids, jobs, housework, elderly parents, social media comparison etc. Knowing how to feed ourselves should be simple, but due to information overload we don't know if we should be vegan-keto-fasting-gluten-free-detoxing all at once and if we can't do any of these perfectly we fall into the "what's the point" trap, so pass the Pringles?!
My training at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition involved using the Functional Medicine Model where we dig deep to find the root cause and trigger of a condition - and also find out out what factors are mediating it. I look at the whole body and join the dots with your symptoms (spoiler alert - it's usually in the gut!). Your history is important too - any past trauma, trips abroad and how many antibiotic course you've had will all be relevant.
It's all evidence based - but what's equally important is what is realistic for my client's lifestyle. I don't prescribe an eating plan, we collaborate. I won't give you strict meal plans to follow, they are not practical and encourage an all-or-nothing mentality by making you feel you need to stick to this way of eating 100% (never mind about a late meeting or a child is ill - or an impromptu invite to a BBQ at a friend's house!), then when the meal plan is over, you've learnt nothing! I want to educate my client so they don't need me again!
I think the "wellness" "clean eating" industry has so many blurred lines with the darker side of the "diet industry" and making people believe they need to eat perfectly - sugar free, grain free, seed oil free... and if you can't follow this you are the devil and don't care about you health!! I have my own experience of this - I have fallen for all things "wellness" (believing this way of eating was nothing like silly 80s low cal low fat diets of the 90s) but all the rules were still exacerbating my own disordered eating.
My own experience of this has steered my clinic towards becoming an eating behaviours specialist and encourage a healthy inclusive diet not a "cut this and that out" way of eating. Yes, it's true many of us do feel better (temporarily) after a gluten free, sugar free juice cleanse - but what did you learn from it?! All I got out of them was huge pendulum swings from one way of eating to another - but the magic is in the middle. Where you can have a slice of home made cake your Grandmother made, but also ensuring that your 3 meals per day are truly nourishing for your needs.
Some of my clients' diets will need tweaking a little and others a lot to ensure you are getting the scope of nutrients our bodies need to function. When the body isn't happy it's pretty good at letting you know: fatigue, bloated, constipation, brain fog, PMS etc...
I don't look at diet alone. I will ask you questions around your sleep and stress levels too - I want the whole picture. Your health journey will be a big jigsaw and I can help you find the missing pieces.
